SMC secretary slams donors over math set distribution to BECE candidates

A School Management Committee (SMC) financial secretary has condemned what he describes as the hypocritical attitudes of some politicians, individuals and organizations.
Anthony Abrowah’s outburst has to do with the seeming seasonal donations of mathematical sets, pens and pencils by some Members of Parliament (MPs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), organizations and individuals to Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates days to the examination time.
In a social media post, he described the late donation as hypocritical, afterthought and unnecessary.
According to him, those donors must do so earlier for the pupils to get those materials to study.
“Do the right thing at the right time…we do what is needed before we do what’s wanted,” an excerpt of his post reads, adding, “most of the MPs and MMDCEs especially, have never visited some of the schools in their localities before let alone to donate learning materials to them. And you wait till the eve of the exams before you donate? Shame on us all.”
The Dabir- Benyadze- Egyeikrom (DBE) basic school “B” financial secretary asserted that those donors must equally be interested in donating teaching materials to schools that would aid their teaching and learning.
He then called on parents of candidates to unite to sack and reject donations from any group or individual who would go to them only when it is a few days before their examinations.
More than 552,000 candidates from 18,501 public and private schools are expected to write this year’s examination, and it is scheduled to commence from Monday, October 17, 2022, to Friday, October 21, 2022.
According to a statement issued by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the body mandated to organize the examination, the candidates are made up of 276,988 males and 275,288 females, and the exercise would take place at 2,023 centres across the country.
